Meet the Makers

Thanks for stopping by!

My name is Brittany and in the photo with me is my amazing husband, Justin, and my adorable Italian Greyhounds, Milo (brown + white) and Lily (grey). They are literally my everything and life is pretty great with them around.

I am an accounting clerk by day at our local college and a busy crafter in the evening and on weekends. I can honestly say that I spend just as many hours (or more) in my workshop than I do at my day job. Justin has been self-employed fulltime for over eleven years now, and I couldn’t be more proud of him.

I didn’t really think that Knotty Design Co. was going to end up being what it is today.

I suffer from anxiety, and while I haven’t had an actual panic attack in a couple of years, it is still a very real and crippling part of my life. I always feel like I need to be moving forward and chasing a goal of some kind. I had recently completed my college accounting program, and while trying to figure out “what’s next”, my business was born from an idea fueled by vodka lemonades in our backyard on a hot summer day. I still remember ordering my Cricut Explore Air 2 (mint green) from our patio table while Justin shouted out potential names for my business, including Knotty Design Co. It was a joke at the time, and crafting was just supposed to be a hobby to keep me busy.

To be honest, I made one sign and I was hooked. I still have that first sign, and it isn’t very pretty, but I practiced until they were beautiful. The business quickly turned into a steady side gig that requires all hands on deck during the busy season. The style of my pieces have evolved over time and producing high quality items is a top priority.

The addition of the laser in summer of 2019 was about the scariest step I have taken since starting. It was very expensive, and some of my family members were skeptical. After months of debating, I took a leap of faith and ordered it. My only regret now is that I did not do it sooner. We have since added a second laser and UV printer to our lineup. I now have more ideas than time to execute them, and that makes me pretty happy!

I am updating this January 1, 2021. This is our third year in business and I cannot wait to see what this year brings.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for choosing to shop from our small business!
